As more and more extended-stay travelers flock to Mexico City, the metropolis has found itself in need of spaces like Gran Ciudad, which feature comfortable, furnished apartments and amenities that surpass what hotels can offer: bars, listening rooms, gaming spaces, terraces, and gyms. Estudio Cristina Grappin was tasked with the interior design of Gran Ciudad’s common spaces and leaned heavily on authentic Mexican materials and artistry. The cantina, for example, features a glazed volcanic bartop and artisanal mezcal jugs from nearby Michoácan. Other details in the tower’s many gathering spaces range from bright murals to artisanally fired tile to wall-hangings created by some of the moment’s most prolific Mexican designers. Ultimately, the project reads as a celebration of local talent.
